Big Island Biofuel Tanks Get Police Escort

Twenty-foot tanks are expected to be on the move this week from Matson’s Hilo terminal to Keaau, where Maui-based Pacific Biodiesel is constructing its newest biodiesel production plant. 

The tanks will be used to store feedstocks such as used cooking oil, jatropha oil and any other sources that Big Island farmers may come up with. The majority of Pacific Biodiesel’s fuel is used for ground transportation. 

The size of the tanks is what is prompting the police escort, said Joel Martin, a spokesman for the company.

The refinery is expected to be up and running in about six months. It could provide a big boost in stimulating the growth of agricultural products to be used as sources for fuel for ground transportation.
